Graphic designer dabbling in writing & photography.
I was born.
After a couple of years enjoying the architectural splendour of Prague, with summers at the cottage, the Soviet tanks came.
Prepared with forged travel visas for every Czech border crossing, my parents waited until the last minute because they didn't really want to leave. My dad came driving up the country road with the window rolled down yelling "Tanks are in Prague! Tanks are in Prague!", alerting the entire village.
After 6 months in Switzerland my parents decided to move to Ottawa. Culture shock and the language barrier ensued.
When I was turning 13 we moved to Vancouver, which is ever so much nicer than Ottawa.
I put myself through university by working my butt off at a posh bistro patio, majoring in PoliSci because I wanted to go to law school. After working at a law firm for a year I didn't want to be a lawyer anymore.
I travelled around Costa Rica and Mexico as a graduation present, then got a job doing research at a magazine. The printing trade was switching to computer just then; when I saw the software in action I instantly knew that that was what I wanted to do.
I have been working as a graphic designer ever since, culminating in a five-year stint in the print shop of the Worker's Compensation Board of BC.
In 2002 I started at Madison's (Canadian Lumber Reporter / Directory); intensive training into the history and current state of the North American lumber market ensued. In Feb 2006 the owner of Madison's sold the Directory to another lumber publisher - the Logging & Sawmilling Journal, which is where I work now.
